Hey Girl!
With a background in nursing and a passion for natural fertility, think of me as your new bestie that you can chat all the TMI with! Learn more.
I know you're not new to the struggles of trying to conceive—especially if you or your partner has served in the military.
But sometimes when you're deep in the fertility journey, you lose track of the bigger picture of what's actually impacting your ability to get pregnant.
Next thing you know, you're too overwhelmed or maybe even too embarrassed to ask for help.
First of all, I want to thank you for your service. Whether it was you who served, or your spouse who served, or someone close to you, I know what a sacrifice it is to have a loved one in the military. And I also want to acknowledge that there are unique health challenges that come along with being in the military—including fertility challenges that are often overlooked.
Today, I'm going to explain why military service impacts fertility, share some sobering statistics you need to know, and show you exactly what can be done about it.
At its most basic level, military families struggle with infertility at dramatically higher rates than the general population due to unique environmental exposures, mental health challenges, and lifestyle demands that directly damage reproductive health.
Let's add a little more depth to that—active duty women experience infertility at three times the rate of civilians (33-37% versus only 12%). Male and female veterans face infertility at 1.5 to 2 times higher rates than civilians. This affects both partners, and the causes range from burn pit exposure and heavy metal toxicity to PTSD and extreme physical demands.
And finally, for those who really want to understand the full picture: military service creates a perfect storm of reproductive damage through chronic exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium), radiation from radar systems, circadian rhythm disruption from shift work, HPA axis dysregulation from combat stress, and nutritional depletion from extreme physical demands—all of which compromise gamete quality, hormone production, and the body's ability to sustain pregnancy.
If you're only at the first level of understanding, it's okay — I'm going to break this all down for you.

I'm all about informed choices and taking control of your health, and I can't make you care about this topic. But let me give you some compelling reasons to pay attention if you or your partner has served.
Military-related infertility is important because:
Important: Don't think that just because you've been told your labs are "normal" or you've had a "normal" semen analysis that everything is fine. The truth is, tissue testing reveals what blood work completely misses—especially when it comes to heavy metal accumulation and mineral depletion.

How military service affects your fertility is just as important as understanding the statistics. Let me break down the three major categories:
Soldiers deployed to Iraq and other combat zones were exposed to burn pit emissions and airborne particulates. My own brother did several tours and said there was no proper PPE or warning given to people around these burn pits—many now struggle with lung issues similar to those who worked at Ground Zero.
Military members are also exposed to:
Here's the thing: sperm and eggs are fragile cells. When they're bombarded with chemicals and heavy metals, it damages egg and sperm quality AND disrupts hormone regulation. The body literally cannot develop healthy eggs or sperm properly when it's dealing with this toxic load.
And here's what most people don't realize: if your body thinks it's not a safe environment to bring a baby into, it will not allow conception to happen. Your body is actually protecting you—but that protection is blocking your fertility.
We all have what I call a "toxin bucket." Depending on your genetics and childhood exposures, that bucket can only hold so much. Once it's full, your body really, really starts to struggle. And for military members, that bucket fills up FAST.
PTSD rates are two times higher in the military—12.9% versus 6.8% in the general population. Honestly, I think the rates are much higher than that and probably underreported, because when people report depression, PTSD, or suicidal thoughts, it can go as a bad mark on their record.
PTSD affects fertility because it can cause:
Then you add the stress from deployments and separation, plus the trauma from combat or even intense training—it's a lot for the body to handle.
Military life creates unique lifestyle challenges:
One major outcome of all this? Adrenal exhaustion—which is incredibly common in military members and absolutely devastating for fertility.
Let me give you a real-world example of how addressing these root causes changes everything:
I'm currently working with a couple where he's in the military. They're both in their 40s, and they'd done three rounds of IVF—all of which failed.
When I did the Fertility Foundations test on them, here's what I found:
They decided to join my Miracle in the Making fertility coaching program, and I sent their results to a company in Canada that custom-mixed supplement powders for each of them based on their unique patterns. We worked on gentle detox, mineral balancing, and restorative nutrition.
Just last week, she texted me: they're expecting! 🎉
Praise God for that miracle! But here's what I want you to understand: a lot of times people think that if IVF hasn't worked, then surely nutrition isn't going to help. But the opposite is actually true. When IVF hasn't worked, it's typically because nutrition is NOT in place.
IVF forces conception. If conception isn't happening on its own, there's a reason. And when you address those root causes—the mineral depletion, the heavy metal toxicity, the adrenal exhaustion—the body can heal itself. Even after failed IVFs.

Raise your hand if you're feeling overwhelmed and don't know where to start!
That's completely normal. Here are my top tips for military families ready to take control of their fertility:
Tip #1: Get Both Partners Tested
I cannot stress this enough—both partners need testing! Male factor infertility accounts for about 30% of fertility issues, female factor for 30%, and combined factors for another 30%. If you're not looking at him at all, you're overlooking 50-60% of potential problems.
The Fertility Foundations test is a hair tissue mineral analysis that reveals:
Every single man who has come through my practice has had things show up on this test—even when his labs and semen analysis were "normal."
Tip #2: Support Your Body's Detox Pathways
This is crucial for everyone, but especially if you're in the military or have served. Chances are you've had way more exposure to toxins than the average civilian.
The beautiful thing? When you balance minerals, you naturally support detox without harsh protocols. We do strategic, gentle mineral and nutritional support that's completely customized to each person's test results.
Tip #3: Take a Restorative Approach
When couples come to me, I actually tell them to take a break from trying for 3-4 months so we can replenish their bodies. I know that sounds counterintuitive when you're desperate to get pregnant, but here's why it works:
First, it takes sex and puts it back in its rightful place—as connection in your relationship, not another item on your to-do list.
Second, both eggs and sperm take about 70 days to develop. During that time, we're giving your body the minerals and nutrition it needs to create HEALTHY eggs and sperm, not just any eggs and sperm.
For an in-depth look at the specific mineral patterns I see in fertility struggles, read this post about the 6 patterns blocking conception.
Let's wrap this up, shall we? The key takeaways are that military families face infertility at 2-3 times the rate of civilians due to unique exposures, stressors, and lifestyle demands—but with the right testing and support, healing is absolutely possible.
At Faithful Fertility, I make it my mission to help military families understand what's really happening in their bodies at the cellular level so they can address root causes, not just mask symptoms. Your service doesn't have to mean the end of your family-building dreams.
The body is incredibly resilient when you give it what it needs—and I've seen it heal in ways that are truly amazing.
If you would like to work with me or know more, please check out the Fertility Foundations Test or send me a message. I love hearing from military families who are ready to take control of their fertility!
